Atlanta CNN —A US-Russian dual national working for Radio Free Europe has been detained in Russia and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent, the US-funded news organization reported Wednesday. Alsu Kurmasheva is currently employed as a journalist and editor for the Tatar-Bashkir service of Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and is based in Prague. According to her employer, Kurmasheva was detained on June 2 in the city of Kazan in Russia while waiting for a return flight to the Czech Republic. According to RFE/RL, Kurmasheva is an accomplished journalist who has been writing about the life of ethnic minorities in Russia’s Tatarstan and Bashkortostan regions for many years. He’s the first US journalist to be accused of spying by Moscow since 1986, when US reporter Nick Daniloff was detained on a similar charge.

A U.S. journalist has been detained in Russia, her employer said, the second such case since the war in Ukraine started. RFE/RL said Kurmasheva, who is based in Prague, has been charged with failure to register as a foreign agent, a designation Russia requires of any organizations or individuals that it perceives as receiving foreign funding. The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, said RFE/RL, which is a U.S. government-funded media company. Kurmasheva was waiting for her passports to be returned when the new charge was announced on Wednesday, RFE/RL said. Gershkovich and his employer deny all charges against him and is considered "wrongfully detained" by the U.S. government.

Oct 19 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Thursday lashed out at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for effectively suspending Russia from the Olympic movement, accusing it of using the Games as a tool of politics and racism. Last week the IOC banned the Russian Olympic Committee for recognising regional bodies from four territories that Moscow claims to have annexed from Ukraine. "And that the Games themselves can be used as an instrument of political pressure against people who have nothing to do with politics. The IOC did not say last week whether they would be admitted to Paris 2024. Stanislav Pozdnyakov, head of the Russian Olympic Committee, said in Perm that the key thing now was to prepare athletes for the 2028 Games.

This year, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is reviewing nominations from both 2022 and 2023, with participants from across the world attending the session in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to examine almost 50 contenders. Russia's Yasen-class submarines have long been seen as a tough challenge for the US Navy. A Russian shipbuilding official said that work is underway to arm them with Zircon hypersonic missiles. Russia's Yasen-class nuclear-powered cruise-missile submarines are quiet, difficult to track, heavily armed, and able to conduct attacks against land- and sea-based targets. The Russian Yasen-class submarines "are designed to deploy undetected within cruise-missile range of our coastlines to threaten critical infrastructure during an escalating crisis," the commander said a year later in congressional testimony. It may still be some time before Russia's Yasen-class submarines deploy with hypersonic weapons, but the Admiral Gorshkov set sail earlier this year on a deployment that took it into the Atlantic Ocean armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles.

Turkmenistan Airlines said it would now fly instead to Kazan, which is more than 700 km (440 miles) east of Moscow. The drone attacks prompted Vnukovo, one of Moscow's airports, to close briefly but it later resumed full operations.

Ukraine has barred its national sports teams from competing in events that include competitors from Russia and Belarus while Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues. "The Executive Committee of the IJF has voted to permit neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the World Judo Championships 2023 in Doha, Qatar, as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN)," the IJF said in a statement on Tuesday. Athletes must not have links to the Russian military or have made pro-war statements. The Ukrainian federation alleged on its website that many of the Russian judoka registered for the championships are from the army.

Russia is operating at least 43 camps to re-educate thousands of Ukrainian children, a study found. The report found children as young as four-months-old had been taken to the camps. Children at some of the camps are also being trained to handle military equipment, drive trucks, and shoot firearms, the report said. MOSCOW, Dec 20 (Reuters) - A blast ripped through a gas pipeline in central Russia, killing three people and disrupting some of the limited amount of Russian gas that is still reaching Europe, local officials said on Tuesday. He said it was unclear when gas supplies via the pipeline could resume, and authorities were trying to work that out. The pipeline, built in the 1980s, enters Ukraine via the Sudzha metering point, currently the main route for Russian gas to reach Europe. Europe's gas prices have surged this year after Russia cut exports through its main gas pipeline route into Germany, leaving only pipelines via Ukraine to ship Russian gas to European consumers. The head office of the state-owned gas producer Gazprom and its local branch did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The video actually shows the inside of the Kazan Arena in Russia. A Google keyword search of the terms “Kazan”, “stadium” and “prayer” brought iterations of the video that trace back to at least June 4, 2019 (here). Major movie studios hardly ever delve into newspaper work any more, and the so-so picture “She Said” is an excellent illustration of why. It falls into nearly every trap that awaits a journalism film, even featuring sequences in which characters type or stand around gazing into computer monitors, both of which exert considerable deflationary pull on drama. Since watching people ask questions leaves viewers at one remove from the story, the solution to the possibility of dramatic deficiency is either to make the journalists themselves abundantly colorful (“His Girl Friday,” “The Paper”) or to cast them as detectives who devise enterprising means to solve a complex puzzle (“All the President’s Men,” “Spotlight”). “She Said,” directed by the German actress and filmmaker Maria Schrader , errs by ignoring both paths. Portraying the New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor , who in 2017 broke the story about producer Harvey Weinstein ’s sexual misconduct, Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are so aggressively ordinary that they leave a personality void at the center of this disappointing film.
